Last Friday,The American-Scottish Foundation had its 21st Anniversary Burns Night Celebration.  This important fundraiser began at 7 p.m. and took place at The University Club which is located at 1 West 54th Street, New York.  This celebratory event began with a reception and a whisky tasting and then the guests were piped into dinner where they experienced a traditional Burns Night Supper.

Now the highlight of the evening was “Piping in the Haggis.” With all it’s fanfare, the gentleman piper announced the arrival of the Haggis and then lead a procession which included the chef, the orator, and the whisky bearers who then presented the Haggis. Then after the circling the room so that all the attendees were able to see the Haggis, the Haggis was set in a place ready to be “addressed.”

Then Kenneth C. Donnelly, who is the president of the Robert Burns Society of New York presented a special recital of Burn’s “Address to a Haggis.”  At an appropriate time in his presentation when the line “An cut you up wi readly slight”, is said, Mr. Donnelly then took his dirk and pierced the Haggis, finishing his “Address to a Haggis” with Gie her a Haggis!”
