Katie’s Kitchen

My friends and I wanted to experience authentic Amish Cooking so with most restaurants on a Saturday closing at 6pm we quickly drove to Katie’s Kitchen which advertised itself as serving as serving authentic Amish Cooking.

What I learned about Katie’s Kitchen is that it’s an Amish owned and operated family restaurant which is located roadside on Route 896 near Strasburg, Pennsylvania. They feature a large dining room with booth seating and a lunch counter which looks into their kitchen. They also offer shaded picnic table for guests who would rather experience an outdoor eating experience.

They serve a wide variety of breakfast, lunch and dinner entrees, including many Pennsylvania Dutch favorites and yes they also have take out! They have been serving Amish food for six years and I must admit that the line to get in was pretty long!!!

Here are some outside images of our Authentic Amish eating experience at Katie’s.

Here are some inside images at Katie’s. I do want to add one interesting fact here before the images and that is the Old Order Amish believe that their women and girls should dress modestly and in solid colors, not cut their hair and not wear jewelry. In addition, they are not allowed to go in public without their hair being covered by their prayer covering. You can see that by the waitresses in some of the images below.

So what did I decide to order?

Truthfully, all the choices were pretty plain and simple so I decided to get The Grilled Chicken Plate that included 2 sides. For me, those two sides were a baked potato and coleslaw.

Am I going to say that the food was great?

No, I can not tell a lie. It was plain and simple and so I accepted it for what it was, an Amish dining experience.

All in all, I’m glad I got to have this experience.

Each new experience for me helps to keep things in perspective and therefore learning acceptance.
