I had an amazing experience when driving from Alice Springs, Australia to the Ayers Rock Resort. I was able to visit the headquarters for The Royal Flying Doctor Service.
Australia is a big place . After googling it I found out that Australia is as large as The United States of America. It’s 7.69 million square kilometres, but with a relatively small population of 25 million people. What I also found out is that two-thirds of their population live around the regional coastlines and the rest of the population live across rural and remote areas. These rural and remote areas are so remote, that sometimes more than an eight hour drive is necessary to get to the closest township which makes access to health providers very problematic and sometimes life-threatening.
The Royal Flying Doctor Service provides 24-hour aeromedical emergency services that can reach anywhere, no matter how remote, within hours. Those services combined with telehealth consultations, fly-in fly-out GP and Nurse clinics, mobile dental services and patient transfers have the Royal Flying Doctor Services always working to service those who live in rural and remote areas to provide them the best medical care possible!
